The “F.T.L.豐泰隆” Tea – making Workshop 

which is of great significance in the history of tea – making  has been listed as a national cultural relic of China.

在制茶史上具有重要意义的 “F.T.L. 豐泰隆” 制茶工坊,已被列为中国国家级文物。

The first generation

Shi Guangling (September 9, 1827 – April 4, 1893)

With the courtesy name Pengfei and the literary name Zhaochuan,

he was a successful candidate in the imperial military examination

in the Xianfeng reign (in 1850),

and was conventionally appointed as a Wuxin Lang

(a military title in ancient China).

字鹏飞,号肇川,于咸丰年间(1850 年)考中武举,循例被授予 “武信郎”(中国古代武官官职)。

Item number IOR/L/AG/1/6/27

in the “Procurement Records of Special Supplies for the Victorian Royal Family”

(India Office Records) has the following annotation in the entry for the year 1888:

“Double-smoked Congou from Fuhkien, mark F.T.L.-D.S., 30 chests for Windsor Castle, retained in the Annual Provision List. 

The procurement record s in the archives of the East India Company in 1887 state:“Special Congou from Fung Tai Loong (Fukien), 

processed with double熏制工艺, 200 chestnuts for Jubilee banquet service.”

was one of the four major tea merchant families

in Tanyang Village during the Qing Dynasty).

He narrated that many factors

led to the decline of

the black tea trade in Tanyang Village.

In the second year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1876), 

tea merchants including Shi Guangling reconstructed Zhenwu Bridge

and enshrined a shrine dedicated to Zhenwu Dadi (the Supreme Emperor of the Mysterious Warrior),

formally naming the bridge “Zhenwu Bridge.” 

In the tenth year of the Tongzhi reign (1871), 

Mr. Shi Guangling donated 500 taels of silver 

to repair 30 li (approximately 15 kilometers) of rural roads.

  • 光绪二年(1876 年),施光凌等茶商重修真武桥,并供奉真武大帝神龛,正式将该桥命名为 “真武桥”。

Secret Art of Tea 窨制

Late one night in the winter of 1969, Shi Jikang dug a half-chi-deep pit beneath the foundation of his ancestral home. With trembling hands, he buried the Secret Art of Tea 窨制,wrapped layer by layer in fertilizer bags.
The aroma ofF.T.L. 豐泰隆that lingered at Queen Victoria’s 1887 state banquet in Windsor Castle had its origins in this yellowed old family tome.
As the sound of pounding doors echoed through the “turmoil,” he knew there would be no safe haven left…
